Abstract | Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is widely recognized as an ideal pretreatment for wet feedstock, and thus an insight into the influences of HTC on feedstock is essential to its subsequent applications. In this study, the evolutions of microstructures in biowaste-derived hydrochars were explored and subsequently correlated with the changes on pyrolysis and gasification reactivities. Meanwhile, the catalytic effect of specific alkali and alkaline earth metals (AAEMs) on gasification process was also analyzed. Experimental results showed that the pore structures and specific surface area of hydrochar were improved with the increased temperatures, and hydrochar grindability was better than their original sample. However, these changes did not function in a positive way on pyrolysis or gasification as previous studies supposed, which might be inhibited by the competitively negative effects from the developed aromaticity in hydrochar. The comparison of hydrochars with and without acid washing demonstrated the self-catalysis reactions of intrinsic AAEMs in ash, but the extent was varied as the differences on its types and contents. By means of quantitatively reloading specific AAEMs in hydrochar, potassium (K) and sodium (Na), compared to iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg) and calcium (Ca), performed a relatively stronger catalytic effect on gasification process, which significantly enhanced the average gasification reactivity of sample. |
