Abstract | Cellulose, a polysaccharide consisting of a linear chain of several hundred to over ten thousand beta(1, 4) linked D-glucose units, is a main component of lignocellulosic biomass. Fermentation of the sugars hydrolyzed from the lignocellulosic biomass can be converted to ethanol-an attractive alternative to fossil fuels. Recently, cellulose hydrolysis under extremely low acids (ELA) has become an attractive process as its corrosion characteristics are very similar to a neutral pH aqueous reaction, thus standard grade stainless steel equipment can be used instead of high nickel alloy which offers a significant advantage in the equipment cost. In the present paper, cellulose hydrolysis under ELA was investigated using a self-designed facility. Quantitative filter paper was chosen as the feedstock and the influence on the reducing sugars yield and the cellulose conversion ratio was studied. The results show that under the optimal experimental conditions of 0.05% H(2)SO(4), 215 degrees C, 30 min and at 4 MPa pressure the reducing sugars yield reached 46.55% and the cellulose conversion ratio was 55.07%. Also Organic acids, especially maleic acid, seemed better than inorganic acids providing 4 times reducing sugars yield but cellulose conversion was found to be nearly unchanged. |
